I've been thinking more about his work as I find more examples of it and I've come to believe that 'godfather or midwife of avant-garde cinema in the U.S.' is very descriptive of what he does. The sense of joy and supportive energy that one gets from this man is extraordinary. Also, his films are simply beautiful because he seems to have absolute faith in whatever he points his camera at. I intend to think more about him and post more articles about him and his work.

Mekas is considered the "godfather" of avant-garde...

Mekas is considered the "godfather" of avant-garde cinema -- or as he seems to prefer "midwife" -- because he was a vocal and active proponent of the genre back in the NYC underground film scene of the '60s.

He wrote a very influential movie column for the Village Voice, founded both the Filmmakers Co-op, which is one of the main distributors of avant-garde films, as well as the Anthology, the largest archivist.

And those are just the highlights.
